Thirty
The rancid seaweed stinking Blinkys moved deeper into the hanger. I listened to them fumble about. Their big, awkward bodies scraped and knocked against the wooden crates strewn about the cavernous space.
I crouched behind one of the crates toward the front of the hanger. Watching the other Blinkys get the silvery suspension capsules upright and stabilized. During my tussle with Bey Jodo, we had knocked a bunch of them capsules down like they was dominos.
Lights had flashed and warning alarms had chirped out from the capsules. The Blinkys were touching the lights and turning them from gold to purple and blue. Which must have been the Blinky equivalent of green ok lights.
As they got the suspension capsules fixed–filled with folks from the base–other Blinkys brought out motorized dollies. Little wheeled conveyances with arms that grasped the capsules and rolled them out through the gap between the towering hanger doors.
I watched for a couple minutes, deliberating my next move.
I half wondered if Bey Jodo was still in the hanger. Or if he’d escaped into the chill pre-dawn air.
Right about then he was the least of my problems.
I needed to figure out how to keep the Blinkys from stealing all the humans from Area 53 and turning them into slaves. Or, even, worse, dinner.
The only option was to get up to the Blinky mothership. Like Azor had figured, the Blinkys had already made one run up to their ship. Now they were loading up for another run.
I ran my hand over the wooden crate next to me.
It was plenty big enough. So were other crates that weren’t quite so visible.
I moved away from the front of the hanger. Listening as I did for the other Blinkys. The ones who’d been sent walking back there looking for little ol’ me.
Pappy told me once I’d always been a handful since the day I was born.
I had no intention of changing.
I eased back from the crates at the front. I needed something toward the back. Crates toward the back end of the hanger would most likely get loaded last. I didn’t want to end up inside a crate at the bottom of a whole lot of other crates.
That would be a good way for the Blinkys to get all the way home, only to open up a certain crate and find the desiccated body of a not-so-smart DeHaas.
The only issue would be avoiding the Blinkys with the tangler rifles, stumbling around, cursing at each other.
I didn’t figure it to be a problem. None of those fat idiots seemed to be the stealthy type. I’d hear their stupid feet slapping the ground long before I saw them.
“Over here!” one of the Blinkys shouted.
The concrete shook as Blinkys ran at the voice. Then there was a strange whining blast, along with flashes of green light.
“Not me, you asses!” the original Blinky shouted.
“Sorry, UudMet.”
“Yeah, sorry.”
“I bet that stings.”
I crept around another pile of crates and came up on a herd of Blinkys. They were staring down at their fallen fellow.
